Pak says India played big role in its bid for UNSC seat
Saturday, October 29, 2011

KARACHI: India played a big role in supporting Pakistan's successful bid to become a non-permanent member of the powerful UN Security Council, Islamabad's envoy to the world body Abdullah Hussain Haroon said here today.
Many of the countries that Pakistan had considered as friends were no longer its friends, but India "supported us in becoming a non-permanent member of the 15-member Security Council," Haroon told reporters at the Karachi airport.
Pakistan, which was challenged by Kyrgyzstan, was backed by 129 of the 193 member states in the UN General Assembly. Kyrgyzstan polled 55 votes.
Pakistan will replace Lebanon, which currently occupies the Asian seat, on January 1, 2012, for a two-year term.
Haroon said that Pakistan had worked very hard in the past six months to win votes for the prestigious seat.
"I think we should not be discouraged by the reaction by some of the nations in the UN because I can say the world wants Pakistan to play its positive role in the global scenario," he said.
Pakistan has been on the Council six times earlier -- 1952-53, 1968-69, 1976-77, 1983-84, 1993-94 and 2003-04. It's new term would overlap with India -- which began its two-year tenure on January 1 this year -- for the fourth time.
Pakistan and India had earlier shared terms on the Security Council in 1968, 1977 and 1984.
Haroon said Pakistan was committed to multilateralism and promoting principles and purposes enshrined in the UN Charter.
To a question on US drone attacks in Pakistan's tribal areas, he said he could only take up the issue if the government authorised him to do so. "But we should not be scared of these attacks." he added

New Delhi, Jul 5: A horrifying incident of rape took place in a moving car when three young men allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old girl for about six hours in north Delhi, after abducting her from a crowded place, recently.
"The girl alleged that she was raped when returning home on the evening of June 27. We have registered a case under IPC sections 363 (kidnapping), 376 (rape) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt). We have arrested one of the accused, a resident of Punjabi Basti at Sabzi Mandi. So far, we have not found any MMS clip in the mobile phone of the detained person but we will question all the three accused. The police was approached last Sunday night after which we immediately launched a probe," said DCP (North) I B Rani. Sources at the police headquarters said a medical test showed "signs" of rape but could not prove it "conclusively".
The victim was burnt with cigarette every time she tried to seek help and was even filmed while the crime was being committed. She was finally dumped near Peeragarhi late at night, threatening to release an MMS if she reported the matter to the police.
According to the police, the victim, a resident of Malkaganj area was returning from the Kamla Market area after tution and had reached the Ghanta Ghar area near Sabzi Mandi, usually a very crowded place, when the incident took place. The girl was abducted around 5pm and it was not until 11pm that she was thrown out of the car.

Beed, Jul 8: A horrifying incident where a 16-year-old minor girl was burnt alive for resisting rape on Wednesday, Jul 6 shocked the entire society. This incident took place in Maharashtra's Beed district.
The deceased's father claimed that his daughter was alone at home when their neighbour Jeevan Kale tried to rape her. But when she resisted, he poured kerosene on the girl and set her on fire.
"He barged into our house and tried to force himself on my daughter. When she tried to defend herself, he beat her up and set her on fire," said Sunil Jadhao, victim's father.
Though the girl was rushed to the hospital, she died to burn injuries and was cremated Thursday, Jul 7. Kale is now absconding. Police have registered a case of murder against him under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

problems of an Indian woman
Wednesday, October 12, 2011
1 comment
It's been over sixty years since our country gained independence, but Indian women are still not allowed to move independently. Though woman is worshipped here as Goddess here, people can't just restrain from committing atrocities against them. Women here experience many hardships at various places right from home to working places.
I have heard some time ago that in developed countries like America, the couples do household works together, but it is not the case in India. Here, women have to do the household works alone while the husbands sit in front of the TV or read the newspaper slouching in a couch. After about eight to twelve hours of work, a typical working woman in India has to return home and make food for the rest of the family. There are , of course, husbands who help wives, but majority of husbands fall into the other category.
Another problem that many of the women in rural areas of India face is that they can't move about freely at nights. I am a small village girl who visits Mumbai at times. Things in metropolitian cities are really different and I have thought a thousand times like how good it could have been had I been living in a city like Mumbai. In my village, women can't go out after six in the evening without the fear of being chased eve teasers.Dowry system in India is actually illegal according to the laws. But the laws imposed have not removed the curse of the system completely. A girls's family is forced to give some amount of money or gold while she gets married. Whatever may be the lumpsome amount given, the in-laws are never satisfied and once the girl enters their house, they torture both the girl and her family, insisting to give them more dowry. Although all the cited problems occur frequently, very few are reported.
The biggest of all crimes against married woman is wife-beating. It is regarded the biggest crime next to rape. Several incdents have been reported in which wives were burnt alive or killed by some other means by their in-laws and husbands. But, as said earlier, the reported cases form only a miniscule of the actual number. I am not saying that there are no one here to take action against these crimes, but I would like to point out that the jurisdiction seems to be too slow in taking actions. There are programs creating awareness amoong people about crimes against women, but you cannot change someone unless he wish to do so. Changes should be done starting from the individual level. The biggest curse of our society is that it is dominated by a pack of male chauvenists, who can't just accept that women are also human beings. Unless these people try to change their minds, this society cannot prosper.
A true incident ( names undisclosed to protect privacy)
I would like to apologise if my words hurt anyone's feelings, but I am frustrated by an incident that occurred in my family. One of my relatives got married to a guy studying in college. Theirs was a love marriage.
After marriage, the guy started to show his real character. He began beating his wife for silly reasons ( for eg. he would beat her if she was in kitchen and din't hear him if he called her). She was working in a BPO company but had to resign because she could't afford to do all the household works and work at the company at the same time.
When she became pregnant, she went to her parents ( according to tradition) and told her miseries to them. Then, this guy tried to find out the sex of the baby. But since it was a good doctor, he din't allow him to know. In the meantime, the parents asked him why he was beating his wife and the man exploded and went out of the house, vowing that he will never enter the place again.
They now live separately and could break up at any moment. But conditions are just too complex. Now, she lives with her parents and her baby at their house. The worst part of it is that the guy doesn't even give them money to live. Their case is still being heard at the local family court.
Do you think it was not wise of her to complain about her husband's conduct to her parents? No? But the In-laws believe it is. Do you think it was her fault that they got a baby girl? No? But the in-laws believe it is. Do you think it was her fault to be not able to manage chores at home and job at an outsourcing company? No? I'm surprised. How could you think like that when the in-laws think the other way around? Huh!
I guess above incident has helped you to realise how serious the problem is. If at all a girl is just fed up with and hate this mediocre society, can you blame her? I am puzzled at how to react at these incidents. You are encourages to post your valuable comments.on how to tackle this problem

Minor girl sexually exploited by 100 in Kerala

Kochi: Police teams have been sent to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and various parts of Kerala to nab at least 70 persons for alleged sexual exploitation of a 14-year old girl in connivance with her father.
The action came after the girl revealed to police about her sexual exploitation, including by her own father, police said.
The child is being treated for venereal diseases at a government hospital here, according to police who believe that 100 odd persons might be involved in the case, 29 of whom had been arrested in recent days.
The girl told police that her father, who used to do odd roles in Malayalam films, first exploited her and then let many others in the industry and outside to do the same.
Hailing from Paravoor in Ernakulam District, the girl had revealed to a close relative about her plight following which a police complaint was filed some three months ago.
Police said 71 accused are absconding and five squads have been formed to trace them.
The victim had named some persons and a few more have to be identified, Crime Branch SP S Surendran told PTI today.
'We are collecting the details of the accused. There is no information about involvement of politicians,' he said.
Police had arrested a Tamil Nadu PWD contractor two days ago. His car which was used to transport the girl to his farm house had been seized.

How to Find Advertisers for Your Website: The Ultimate Guide
Sunday, October 09, 2011
No comments
Direct advertising sales is arguably the best method to monetize a website. Finding advertisers for your site and actually closing the deals, however, is not as straight forward. Over the past 6 months I had more than 10 high profile companies sponsoring Daily Blog Tips, and through out this article I will share what I have learned along the way.
The Pros
- More money: The first advantage of selling your own ads is the fact that you will cut the middlemen out, increasing your revenue potential. Suppose you sell text link ads on your sidebar through a certain company, and the text links sell for $50 monthly. Since you are using the company network to sell the ads, they will eat 50% of the price, and you will end up earning only $25 monthly for each text link. If someone is willing to pay $50 for a text link on your site, though, it means that they are getting $50 of value out of it. Why, then, should you share that with someone else?
- Independence: Sure, large advertising networks have access to a wider pool of advertisers, and they have more credibility to close the deals. But if you have all the requirements in place (see the section below) and spend some time looking at the right places, I am sure that you will be able to sell your own ads just as efficiently as the larger networks.
- Flexibility: The third advantage of selling direct advertising is that you will have much more control over where and how the ads will be displayed (i.e., you can avoid intrusive advertising). Google Adsense is nice, but unless you blend it with the content – annoying some of the readers – you will get terribly low click-through rates.
- Credibility: Finally, having sponsors and direct advertisers on your blog might help your credibility. Even small and poorly crafted blogs can stick some Adsense units here and there. Having established companies that are willing to partnership with your site, on other hand, can signal that your content has quality and that the site is somewhat professional.
The Cons
- Time consuming: While selling your own ads has many advantages, it is no panacea. The first drawback of this monetization option is the time that it will consume. This time will be spent optimizing your website for the ads, finding potential advertisers, negotiating with them, and handling the administrative matters (e.g., making payments, tracking statistics, delivering reports and so on).
- Many requirements: Selling direct adverting is not as easy as making money from Google Adsense. As you can see from the section below, you will need to have a popular blog, a professional looking design, special software and the like.
- Unstable: Unless you close deals for very long periods, which is unlikely, you will find your self looking for new advertisers or optimizing your website to attract new ones every other month. The opposite is true for most advertising networks, where you just need to plug some code and they will do the rest of the work. (If your site or blog is just a hobby, therefore, direct advertising might not be the best option)
What You Need to Have in Place
- A popular website: Before landing direct advertising deals you will need to have a good amount of traffic on your site. There is no “magical” number here, but a good rule of thumb would be 1000 daily unique visitors. If you are below that mark you should focus on building traffic instead of looking for advertisers. Other factors like Google Pagerank, RSS subscribers and Alexa rank might also help. (Notice that small websites might also be able to sell direct advertising, but usually the time spent on that will not justify the results)
- A clear focus: You might have the most popular site on the Internet (well, not as extreme as that, but you get the point), but unless your site also has a very clear niche and a defined audience, advertisers will not find it very attractive. This means that you should avoid rambling about 100 different topics on the website. Advertisers want to deliver a message to specific people, and the more specific the better.
- A professional looking design: If you are planning to monetize your website through sponsors, you probably should invest some money into a professional looking design. Advertisers will be associating their product or service with your website, and not too many of them would be willing to get mixed with an ugly, MySpace looking site.
- Give visibility to the sponsors: This point is connected to the previous one. Not all templates and themes will be suitable for selling direct advertising. Preferably you want to have an idea of what kind of advertising you will sell (e.g., 468×60 banners, 125×125 banners, text links) and design your website according to those objectives. Advertisers want visibility, so reserve a good spot for them.
- Adserver software: In order to serve your ads, rotate banners and track statistics you will need to install an Adserver. If you are looking for a simple solution you should try WP-Ads. This WordPress plugin will serve ads for specific ad zones that you create. The only drawback is that it does not count clicks (only impressions). If you need a more sophisticated solution check OpenAds. You will need to spend some time learning how to use it, but it offers virtually all the features you will ever need.
- “Advertise Here” page: It is very important to have an “Advertise Here” page. On this page you want to give some details about the website, like audience, traffic and any other factor that might be of the interest of potential advertisers. Secondly, make sure that you have some link to that page on the navigation bar and if possible close to the zone where the ads will be displayed. You can see a perfect example of such layout onCopyblogger.com.
- Standard letter to approach advertisers: While some advertisers will contact you after reading your “Advertise Here” page, the rest of them will need to be directly approached by you. In that case, it is a good idea to create a standard letter to contact the advertisers. There is no “one size fits all” solution here, but you can follow some general guidelines:1. Introduce yourself and quickly explain what the email is about
2. Explain why you decided to contact them and what they have to gain
3. Give details about your site (traffic, subscribers, topic, audience)
4. Give details about the advertising options (location on the site, max number of advertisers, monthly price)That is it, after that information the advertisers should be able to decide if they are interested or not. If they reply, then you will fix the details. Bear in mind that all the info I mentioned should be contained in 2 or 3 paragraphs. If you send an essay to potential advertisers they will just skip it altogether. - Accepting payments: You might have everything in place, but if you are not able to cash payments – or more importantly, if advertisers are not able to pay easily – you will end up losing deals. PayPal is the best option here. Notice, however, that a personal account will not suffice. You will need at least a premier account to be able to accept credit cards.
Where to Find the Advertisers
Once you have your direct advertising program established, you will start to receive inquiries from people. On the beginning, however, you will need to hunt advertisers down. Do not get discouraged if get turned down initially, provided you have all the aforementioned requirements, sooner or later you will find someone willing to take a shot on your site.
- People linking to your site or articles: If a company is willing to link to your articles or to add your website under its “Links” or “Resources” section, it is also probably willing to discuss about advertising on your site. Keep track of those incoming links.
- People leaving comments/e-mails: The same principle applies to people leaving comments on your blog or sending you e-mails. If among them you see an employee or the owner of a company that could be interested on your website, bingo! Contact him or her and get the conversation going.
- AdWords advertisers: Through out your search for advertisers you will notice that most of the established companies are not aware of the benefits of online advertising. If a certain company is already spending money on Google AdWords, however, it is very likely that it would also be open to other forms of online advertising. Think about some keywords that are related to your topic and Google them. Check the sponsored links that will appear and contact them. (You can also check the advertisers that appear on the Adsense units of related websites)
- Other advertising networks: While Google AdWords is by far the largest advertising network on the Internet, there are many others that could be useful. Check the companies that are spending money on AdBrite, Text-Link-Ads, BlogAds, SponsoredReviews and so on.
- Banner advertisers on similar sites: Check out popular websites on your niche and see what companies are advertising there. Provided you offer them an interesting deal (i.e., a reasonable price for your size), I am pretty sure they will be interested.
- Create a “Potential Sponsors” bookmark folder: This technique produced outstanding results for me. I have a bookmark folder on my browser called “Potential Sponsors.” Every time I come across a company or website that could be interested in sponsoring my website, I bookmark it. Currently I have over 100 bookmarked sites on that folder, and I have not approached half of them yet.
How Much to Charge
- You need to provide value: It is all about value. A potential sponsor or advertiser will want to see some returns for the money he will be spending on your site, and this can be seen as visibility (impressions) and leads (clicks and possible sales). Make sure, therefore, that your advertising deals will deliver.
- The numbers: Remember that there are some pretty cheap advertising options out there (e.g., Google AdWords), and you will need to be competitive. Provided you reserved a good spot for the sponsors (sidebar or header, preferably) you could start charging a $0,5 CPM (cost per 1000 impressions). If your blog is generating 100,000 monthly page views, therefore, a banner spot on your sidebar should cost around $50. Start low and build your way upwards. Popular blogs (e.g., TechCrunch) have a higher CPM, sometimes as high as $10, but you will need a huge credibility to arrive there.
- Cross-check: You can easily check if you are charging a suitable rate by using Adsense units on the places where you will sell direct advertising. Analyze how much you would gain with Adsense, and adjust your rates accordingly. Secondly, you can also check similar sites that are already selling direct ads.
- Be flexible regarding the terms: Flexibility is key. First of all make advertising agreements on a month-to-month basis. People don’t like to commit to something they are not completely sure about. If someone proposes you a longer deal, offer a discount in exchange.
- Offer test periods: Unless you have a very popular website, you will find potential advertisers reluctant to spend real money. If you are confident that the deal will create value for both parties, however, you can use that on your favor. Offer a free test period whenever needed. Some of the times the advertiser will turn you down after it, but other times they will confirm the deal. Either way you have nothing to lose.

How to set up a Facebook fan page that works

Full disclosure: Yes, I have a Facebook page, but it’s private. I use Twitter andLinkedIn for business, but I haven’t set up a page for my copywriting business.
However, I DO run a Facebook page for the same nonprofit that I mentioned in a recent post on email marketing. It’s performing well, averaging 50 new fans a day.
The first thing people ask me is what type of account is best? A group or a fan page? For me, that’s simple. A fan page. Why? A post on Mashable about thedifference between Facebook pages and groups lays out the differences nicely. Here’s a summary:
Groups are great for organizing on a personal level and for smaller scale interaction around a cause. Pages are better for brands, businesses, bands, movies, or celebrities who want to interact with their fans or customers without having them connected to a personal account, and have a need to exceed Facebook’s 5,000 friend cap.
A fan page lets you grow as big as you want, send updates to an unlimited number of people, and keep the focus on the organization without revealing the administrator (unless you want to).
Okay, so once you’ve set up your account as a fan page, then what? Here are some tips:
Upload a logo or photo with a web address at the bottom. It won’t be clickable, but fans can see where to go if they want to visit your website.
Fill out your info page completely. Here you can have a clickable web address, company overview, mission, and products. You can give only what Facebook asks for or get creative and provide other information as well.
For example, in your company overview, you can list links to pages on your website, your newsletter signup form, other social media, or whatever you want.
Use FBML to create a landing page. FBML is Facebook’s version of HTML, which you can use with an application called Static FBML. This lets you render basic HTML in a box or tab on your page. You won’t find it in your default applications, but you can find it with a search in the application directory.
The idea is that instead of sending people to your wall, as most people do, you send them to a landing page with whatever message you want to provide. For example, you can give a short description of your organization and tell people to click the “become a fan” button.
This is one of those “duh” things you may not think about at first, but which can dramatically increase your Facebook growth. A landing page is just good direct marketing.
Use your tabs wisely. If you think of a Facebook page as a secondary website for your business, you’ll realize that the tabs at the top of the page are like site navigation. You can have a tab for your newsletter, a tab for donations, a tab for products, etc. How? With that nifty FBML application.
Don’t forget the sidebar. Anything you can put in your tabs, you can also put in your sidebar. A newsletter signup form fits here nicely. So does a poll (another application you can add), affiliate banner, or set of links.
Post often. The same rules apply to Facebook as any other social media. It’s all about content and interaction. Posting something every few weeks won’t cut it. Post every day or even several times a day to make sure you’re showing up in the news feeds of your fans. This can be links to your blog, product announcements, questions, news items, or anything your fans would be interested in.
Every time someone becomes a fan, comments, clicks the “like” link, or shares your post, it shows up in that fan’s news feed for all their friends to see. So “viral” is built in.
Link to your page from everywhere. If you want fans, you have to let people know you’re on Facebook. Put an icon or link in your newsletter, on your website or blog, in your email footer, everywhere.
Email and blog it. Don’t be shy. Do an email blast driving subscribers to your fan page. Post a blog about what’s happening on your fan page with an invitation to become a fan.
Send updates to your fans. This feature is a little like email. Don’t abuse it, because Facebook fans aren’t expecting (and don’t want) an avalanche of messages from you. But used wisely, this handy feature lets you update fans about your products, sales, and events.
Subscribe to similar fan pages and groups. You can buy ads on Facebook, but the consensus is that response is poor. A cheap way to reach beyond your fans and attract new fans is to subscribe to similar pages and groups and post short messages inviting people to visit your page. Don’t do it too often. And don’t be spammy.
There’s more you can do with Facebook, but this is plenty to get you started.
Is it worth it? Absolutely. I’ve found that Facebook can drive significant traffic to your website as your fan base grows. And it gives you a totally independent way to interact with potential customers or supporters.
